You know that thing about how photographers hide behind their cameras? It’s all in the past. Dutch designer Bas Groenendaal developed the digital camera Scope to be used as a therapeutical instrument by unprivileged children. By photographing themselves and the place where they live, they are able to rediscover their space and identity, and share this point of view with others. The product has a very low cost of production, and an innovative look, exploring simple lines and vibrant colors. The proposal is to adopt a new perspective in photography, one in which the photographer and the world are mutually looking at each other. Bas Groenendaal believes that self-expression is able to change not only the people, but also the world we live in.

The idea of mobile phones making music is far from being new, but it looks like someone has finally decided to take the concept seriously. The Japanese au Design Project and Yamaha teamed up to make a series of mobiles that double as musical instruments. The project resulted in six unique prototypes. The Band In My Pocket model incorporates several brass instruments, like trumped and harmonica. The sounds are generated through the user’s voice, and are controlled by the buttons. Trio In Your Hand has a more electronic approach, with an interface for DJs and dilettantes to make their own scratches. Box To Play is one of the most creative, in visual terms: a foldable handset, with several musical interfaces, including synth and a platform for scratches. The little piano Key To Touch is also foldable, and comes with a tiny keyboard. And, Strings for Fingers functions as a sliding interface to reproduce the sound of instruments like violin and cello. Check out more images and videos, after the jump.

The Travelodge hotel chain has just opened in Uxbridge Central (Middlexex, Inglaterra) an innovative hotel built from prefab shipping containers. The outside of the building was covered and received windows, and looking at the facade no one would guess what the structure actually looks like. The 120-room hotel was built in only 10 weeks, and the prefab structure saved about US$900.000, according to design studio Verbus Systems. Travelodge is now planning to open a version with 307 rooms at Heathrow. Famous for its affordable rates, the company intends to save almost 20 million dollars per year by using this new construction method.

Zach Johnsen is a haunted illustrator. His ghosts, aparitions and freaks come to an exorcism in his watercolors and illustrations, beautifully composed in a vibrant, vivid, and loose line. Zach’s work explores various mediums: print, skateboards, skis, furniture, sneakers, and apparel. Widely recognized in the USA, Australia and Europe, the artist currently works in variations of his work, with canvas paintings and installations for video and animation. An interesting outcome of these experiments are the series of photos depicting his characters roaming the real world as if nothing were more natural. Check out more images after the jump.

Slow Food Nation is an event that celebrates the gift of food in America, and it happens in San Francisco during the Labor Day Weekend. The event gathers enthusiasts of the growing movement of sustainable food, and brings options of healthy tasty food to thousands of people. This year’s new feature is the collaboration of several architecture firms in San Francisco, which collaborated with curators to build the stands and present projects for slow food to be appreciated. Naturally, all the projects are eco-friendly, and some of them include very clever tricks for the reuse of materials. A good example of this is the cheese stand created by Macy Architecture, built with 1,100 milk cartons that build its structure; a smart way to hold back fast food culture, seducing both for the advantages of healthy eating and for the delightful spaces in which it can be tasted. The event will go on until September 1st. Check out more images after the jump.

With the project Impossible is Nothing: Sports in Art, giand sports brand Adidas has managed to turn athletes into artists. The brand invited some sports stars to create works of art based on their own history, including David Beckham, Tyson Gray, Ian Thorpe and medal winners Jeremy Wariner, Allyson Felix, and Yelena Isinbayeva. After touring China, the pieces are currently in Beijing, and in October they’ll take a trip to Hong Kong, where they’ll be up for auction. The money will go to benefit Right to Play Sports Charity.

This is the one but last day of our special about China, and the topic is design and architecture. An event that covered a lot of the contemporary production in these fields was China Design Now, which took place from March to July 2008 in England. China Design Now brings an interesting retrospective about the country, and draws parallels between its imperial past and the urbanization of today. Check out more information and images, after the jump.

The proposal of the exhibition was a trip through the main cities of the Chinese coast: Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The curators’ research started in Shenzhen, the birth of the contemporary graphic design in China. Thirty years ago, the city was no more than a little fishing village, and now it stands out as an important economic center, with a population of over 10 million. Since the city was a center for the printing industry, young design students and professionals saw it as a potential market. With the freedom to create something completely different, without the political mannerism of the past, a new experimental language was born, and it was like nothing the country had ever seen. The new generations of designers are able to add even more global influences into their work, and combine that to the local culture in an amazing way. The new guidelines of this generation include collaboration with artists, technology, and an identification with the growing Chinese youth culture.

Shanghai is the most internationally recognized Chinese city since the XIX century. Known as “Paris of the East”, it was the main disseminating point for the “Modern China” — the first car engine, the first movie, and the first Qipao dress appeared there. With the economic rebirth back in 1992, the city began to grow even faster, and is not a powerful economic center, the nest of the emerging Chinese middle class. Despite of the criticism against the consumption lifestyle that has been growing in China, Shanghai has been a trendsetter in the desire market.

Beijing, the Chinese capital, has never lost its place as the nation’s political and cultural center. In order to host this year’s Olympics, the city went through a quick and expressive urban renovation in every aspect: cultural and sports infrastructure, real estate, commerce and sustainability. China is revamping its image for the world to see, and this has been attracting architects who are able to imagine the new, each with its vision about how the new China should look like.

As we said back in this post, contemporary art in China has been growing through its clever combination of innovation with traditional elements. And this new Chinese creativity has been taking over the streets, as our highlights of the day are sure to illustrate: 798, the Chinese SoHo, and the city of Chongqing, which gathered artists, students and workers to cover over 40,000 meters of the city in graffiti. Check it out, after the jump.

Located in the city of Beijing, 798 used to be an industrial district of the Chinese government, back in the 1950s. In the 1990s, the area was abandoned, and it remained forgotten til its rebirth in the early years of this millenium. As it happened in SoHo back in the 1960, cheap rent and spacious lofts caught the eye of artists, who quickly occupied the area, turning it into an artistic community and attracting galleries, bookshops, cafes and restaurants. The whole district breathes art, with a landscape filled with sculptures, urban interventions, and an atmosphere of charm, as you can see in the images below.

The city of Chongqing, one of the most populous in China, has promoted a true celebration of street art, gathering over 300 people from the local community to turn an area of 40,000 square meters into the largest residential area in the world to be covered in graffiti. Students, artists, and workers worked hard for a whole year, and the result was the unique landscape you can see in the pictures below: an environment filled with creativity and inspiration, most definitely worth a visit for those who are travelling to the gigantic China.

The cultural expansion of China has brought radical changes in the country’s culture. The nation is currently recognized as a fashionable spot, and as a theme for fashion itself, inspiring new beauty standards for the world. Check out some recent highlights that made the fashion world point at China as an example of innovation.

The Chinese aesthetical revolution inspired brands like Pirelli, who shot its traditional calendar in an eastern location for the first time ever, in Shanghai. In the cast were Chinese models Mo Wan Dan and Du Juan, who were photographed by the highly acclaimed Patrick Demarchelier.

Italian brand Fendi also took advantage of the exotic Chinese scenery to promote its first fashion show at the Great Wall of China. The event costed US$ 10 million and reinforced the brand’s success in a nation that has only recently opened up for the luxury market.

From China to the world, fashion designer Vivienne Tam is the most important name in disseminating the China Chic aesthetics. Tam participated in the NYFW, and her pieces are in museums all over the world. Another highlight is the mix of art and fashion of designer Ma-ke, with her brand Wu-Yong (which means “useless”), which premiered in Paris with a cross-over of installation and fashion show.

The Chinese video production has been growing along with the economy, bringing us a truth hord of avant-garde artists that use western techniques spiked with their unique local vision. Check out the highlights and videos, after the jump.

One of the main representatives of this movement is Cao Fei, a young multimedia artist that uses cosplauers in her videos, creating narratives that come close to video games, in a brilliant experimental aesthetical composition. Her pieces address the differences between virtual and real, creating a new and fantastic reality.

Yang Fudong explores issues about the human condition, creating myths and introducing autobiographical data into her videos. His pieces remain fully open for the viewer’s own interpretation, as he uses symbols from his youth to draw a conflict with the modernization of China, in a parallel of generations, cultures, and ages.

Perhaps the most important name in the new Chinese cinema, Wong Kar Wai, is comfortable both in the universe of art and in the world of advertisement. Internationally acclaimed for full-length features like My Blueberry Nights and 2046, he has lent his camera talents to advertisement campaigns for companies such as Phillips and BMW. Building dreamlike worlds with his virtuosity in the use of light and color, Wong Kar Wai has a unique ability to create tension and tell stories through images packed with mysteries and symbols.

We’ll be back tomorrow to talk a little bit about how China has been influencing the West in behavior and fashion.

On the second day of our special about the country of the great wall, the hot topic is contemporary art. The production of Chinese artists has been impressing the world, and exploring innovative technique and themes. Check out three highlights from Chinese art that have been gaining worldwide recognition with their amazing work.

Multimedia artist Cai Guo-Qiang gained woldwide recognition for his large-scale installations and explosion projects that have roamed museums all over. Even MoMa has already hosted his unexpected his unexpected explosions. As has the olympics, since Guo-Qiang is head of the art direction and special effects for the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing.

Art collective More Yum Cha approaches the cultural opening and the change it brings in several aspects of the new China. Mixing elements of traditional Chinese iconography and symbols of the Western consumption society, the artists criticize consumerism and the shallowness of corporate globalization.

The breathtaking performances and installations of Zhang Huan, on the other hand, generally take place in public spaces. His works are full of nudes and references to budhism, with highly impacting and sometimes shocking images that strenghten the critical and acid content in the artist’s universe.

We’ll be back on monday with some highlights that have been bringing a revolution into the language of video. See you then.

Now that the West has finally realized how big China is, the country itself seems to be living up to its size, and its influence over the whole world will not stop growing. In the wave of the crazy industrial growth that China has been experiencing, the country has opened its doors to a fresh cultural infrastructure. Receiving influences from the entire planet, China develops its own forms of expression, combining tradition and innovation. With the Olympic Games in Beijing, we have prepared a China Special. And, since 8 is the number of the Beijing Olympics, we have selected 8 topics to explore until August 24th, the official closing day of the Olympics. Check out a selection of highlights in youth culture, straight out of the red giant, after the jump.

The new Chinese generation has taken a leap into the globalized world, making the web a powerful tool for expression and social networking. The www has grown something close to 300% in China, over the last 5 years, and the influence of the Chinese youth in the blogosphere has reached the astronomic figure of 34 million blogs. Manazines and websites turn to the youngsters for an answer about what is cool and innovative.

Entertainment, lifestyle, fashion, art, trends, as well as new cultural expressions, such as graffiti, hip-hop and street culture, are discussed and guided by Chinese youngsters. And this generations’s production encompasses several important topics in the national identity, such as the traditional aesthetics, which is constantly renewed and referenced in desin, art, and illustration, often as a way to criticize the past, through symbols like violence, eroticism, and evil.

Classic elements of Chinese culture from the 60 and 70s turn up in bags and totes, turning political symbols into a vintage aesthetics, strongly appreciated by young Chinese people.

Their creativity is also environmentally aware. Shopping bags become collectibles among the youth, and are appreciated both for their prints of vintage posters and for the eco-friendly appeal.

Exclusiveness is also increasingly valued, as handmade stuff and limited series become objects of desire for the young Chinese.

Exhibitions and shopping malls adjust to their clients’ taste, promoting interactive experiences. Participation in creating products and events makes it possible to show and create works at the spot. This is a growing trend in China.

Our all-eyes-on-China continues tomorrow, with some highlights from the world of Chinese contemporary art.

This is how the Brazilian company Gueto has been conquering space in the ecodesign market, innovating in concepts and manufacturing techniques. This combination of creativity and commitment to low cost solutions was the key behind Miss Rio Ottoman, made entirely from EVA leftovers from companies like Suljet. The flip-flop material is reused “as is”, which means not only low cost, but also low energy consumption (and no waste). The product is a part of the Misses Collection, and has won multiple awards, including the IF Design Award. An intelligent, simple, and inspiring piece, that adapts perfectly to indoor and outdoor environments.

What would happen if nature could fight back? This is the idea that Paris-based street artist Ludos has been planting all over the streets of the city of lights, in a series of gorgeously intense images. The theme of the Nature’s Revenge series is plants and flowers evolving into hybrids of nature and machines, where petals become firearms and surveillance cameras. Like the legendary Banksy and other street artists, Ludos donates his pieces to the city, so that they become part of the urban landscape. However ephemeral the pieces, exposed to weather and interferences by the public, the idea behind them remains. Check out more images, after the jump.

After taking place in Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre, the Electronic International Language Festival (FILE, from Portuguese) stays in Sao Paulo from August 5 through 31, at Centro Cultural Fiesp. For the last nine years, the biggest event of art and technology in Brazil and Latin America has been opening room to the country in the international scenario in both categories. It gathers more than 323 creations of artists from the whole world - from multimedia pieces, most of them interactive, to cinematographic productions.

At the event, within so many possibilities, the visitor can make music by touching leaves of plants just like keys of a synthesizer. Two of the most popular works among the public are videogames in which the player interacts by moving his own body. It is filmed by a little camera and then projected together with the graphics.

On each of the festival’s editions, artists, theorists and researchers meet up in symposiums to discuss the present and the future of the digital electronic culture. This year, FILE’s highlight is the 4k cinema, which inspires the event’s name. During the first week, fourteen films, each 6 or 7 minutes long, shot with this technology were shown at SESI Popular Theatre. The resolution presented is absurd: 2,160 vertical pixels multiplied by 4,096 horizontal pixels, resulting in images of 8 million pixels per frame - a number 4 times bigger than the HD (high definition) and Blu-ray technologies and that surpasses 24 times the quality of the conventional TV set. Though its expensiveness and the fact that 4k can be found only in few labs today, it is promised to promote a revolution on cinema since it allows a deeper immersion of the public inside the movie, with a much more realistic and full of details experience.

The digital art portal CGSociety has just been hijacked by a musician. Instead of digital projects, Justin Lassen, uses the portal to share the music he makes inspired by the concepts created by others. Much like the artists and designers who listen to music to create, Lassen writes his music inspired by colors, textures and themes created by the artists with whom he collaborates. It is interesting to notice how images are refreshed after listening to the soundtracks Lassen creates to them. Lassen has done remixes to names like Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park and Evanescence.

French NGO VIA (Valorization of Innovation in Furnishing) has been around since 1979. The organization receives funds from the French Ministry of Industry to develop a program of actions that promote and value creative design applied to contemporary life. One of its main programs are the Assistance Grants, which select projects by companies or designers. A committee of design specialists analyzes the applicants and selects a few to become prototypes. The idea is to open the market for new, talented professionals. Since the program was created, VIA has already sponsored over 400 inspiring projects. This year’s winners showed their pieces at the Triennale di Milano.

William Lamson is an aesthete of fun. This young American’s work resembles Marcel Duschamp’s non-language, with actions and interferences that recreate childhood games, spontaneous and free of rules. The aesthetic result of these games is interesting, with designs arising from space itself, in interaction with objects or with the artists’ body. These are essentially open pieces, with several underlying messages, but without forcing the expectator to the meaning of hermetic references. At the artist’s web site, there is a nice collection of beautifully comic videos, that are fascinating not only for the tension of repetition, but also for how authentic the artist’s participation appears to be in his own work. Check out more images after the jump.
